Honorable Minister, Ngeema Sangay Tshempo graced the opening ceremony of the 13th Skills Competition at Technical Training Institute – Khuruthang, Punakha on 27th November, 2016.
Speaking at the event, Lyonpo said that if you have skills to sell, then you can easily employ yourself by setting up business related to your skills. Therefore, it is important to have skills in this day and age.
Lyonpo also declared that the winners of this year’s competition will be sent as observers to the regional and international Skills Competition to be held in UAE in October 2017.
The skills competition is an annual event of the Ministry organized by the Department of Occupational Standards. It has been adopted as one of the key strategies to promote the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the country. The Skills Competition was first initiated in 2003 by the then National Technical Training Authority (NTTA).
60 competitors will compete in the following specific critical occupations for the duration of three days (a standard duration of 18 hours) from November 27-29, 2016:
- Stone Masonry (Dozop)
- Brick/Tile Laying
- Electrical (Domestic House Wiring)
- Cabinet Making
The successful candidate in each of the six trades will be awarded attractive cash prizes and certificates as follows, on November 30, 2016:
- Cash prize of Nu. 50,000 for the winners with Certificate of Merit
- Cash prize of Nu. 30,000 for first Runner ups with Certificate of Merit
- Cash prize of Nu. 20,000 for second Runner ups with Certificate of Merit
Certificate of Competency for those competitors securing 60 percent marks and above
Certificate of Participation for those competitors securing less than 60 per cent marks
In addition to the cash prize, Himalayan Infotech, Thimphu has sponsored tools (Gedore) to the winners.
